The Supreme Court has ordered an investigation into Judge Seamus Woulfe's attendance at the Oireachtas Golf Society dinner last Wednesday.
The court has asked former Chief Justice, Ms Justice Susan Denham, to consider "certain questions" arising out of his attendance at the event.
She has been asked to report her conclusions and recommendations to the Chief Justice.
Ms Justice Denham will begin her work immediately.
She has been asked to consider whether Mr Justice Woulfe should have accepted the invitation to the dinner.
She will also examine whether he should have left the hotel in the light of the prevailing situation, and whether he should have attended the golf event without attending the dinner.
Ms Justice Denham has also been asked to consider whether there are any relevant codes of practice or guidelines, and to make any appropriate recommendations.
Last week, Mr Justice Woulfe - a current Supreme Court Judge and former Attorney-General - 'unreservedly apologised' for attending the Oireachtas Golf Society event in Galway on Wednesday.
It comes after two resignations - Dara Calleary as Agriculture Minister and Jerry Buttimer as Leas-Cathaoirleach of the Seanad - for attending the same event.
Meanwhile pressure is mounting on EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan, as the European Commission has asked him to further explain his actions.
