Many commentators are predicting the unveiling of a long-rumoured Google music streaming service. Several of the major music labels, including Sony and Universal, are reported by the Verge to be already on board. Unlike the existing Google Play music store, a Google streaming offering would compete with Spotify and others in the paid subscription field. Apple and Amazon are also rumoured to be preparing similar offerings, with music streaming expected to grow into a very competitive field in the foreseeable future.

Last year I/O saw the announcement of Google Glass, the forthcoming ‘smart glasses’ that are currently being tested by selected ‘ambassadors’ (who are paying around €1,000 for early access). I/O will almost certainly see new announcements related to Glass – whether that’s more feature announcements or a confirmed release date & final pricing.

I/O is primarily a developer-based event, and they’ll expect more information about the next Android operating system updates, as well as an upgraded Google Nexus device. The conference will also feature events and talks dedicated to gaming, cloud storage, Chrome and Google Drive.

The full timetable is available here, and Google will be offering multiple live video streams throughout the two day event. I/O kicks off at 5pm Irish time today.
