A government backbencher wants below-cost alcohol sales to be banned.
The practice only became legal in recent years following the abolition of the Groceries Order in 2006.
It is claimed that because retailers reclaim VAT for losses on products they decide to sell below cost, the exchequer is losing out on 21 million euro a year.

Minister for Children James Reilly has also acknowledged that the matter "must be addressed".
