There has been a significant breakthrough in the new round of Croke Park 2 talks.

The Irish Times says the Government revised key elements of plans for pay cuts and increment freezes for higher earners in the public sector.

Whilst a deal in principle was reached with Garda representative bodies who walked out of the last round of talks.

These latest talks are brokered by the head of the Labour Relations Commission Kieran Mulvey - who is expected to report back to Government today on the progress made.

Irish Times' Industry Correspondent Martin Wall spoke to Newstalk's Breakfast:

Meanwhile, the UNITE trade union, which last month voted to reject the proposals, says the Government needs to focus on investing in the economy - instead of withdrawing money from it.

The Chairman of the Labour Relations Commission is trying to achieve agreement on €300 million savings to the public sector pay bill, or else the government will impose cuts - details of that could be announced by Minister for Public Expenditure, Brendan Howlin.

Yesterday it was reported that the Government could reward the public-service unions that voted in favour of the Croke Park II deal, while implementing more stringent cuts on those that refused to co-operate.

But Wicklow TD, Simon Harris was staying tight lipped on whether that proposal is on the table:
