The coalition is reportedly considering new laws to recognise pre-nuptial agreements for marrying couples.

According to the Irish Independent, the Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald is investigating what impact pre-nups would have on families.

A pre-nuptial agreement would allow a couple to agree on the possible division of assets prior to their marriage. They are often associated with couples between which there is a significant difference in wealth and assets.

The Catholic Chruch is opposed to such legislation being brought forward, as they believe it would weaken the definition of marriage.

Under current law, such agreements have no legal standing, but can be used as a guide in the division of assets in separations cases.
