The Government is expected to commit hundreds of millions of euro to help fund the construction of a major new road in Northern Ireland today.
The A5 runs through counties Derry and Tyrone and links Donegal and the northwest to Dublin.
There have been many false dawns since the plans to upgrade the A5 were approved by the Stormont Executive 17 years ago.
It is hoped the Governments new funding commitment can see approval for the scheme reconfirmed so that construction work can finally begin in the near future.
There are concerns, however, that the issue could once again end up in the courts as the opposition group, The A5 Alliance, has mounted a number of legal challenges.
The A5 is considered one of the most dangerous roads in Ireland with 48 people having been killed in collisions along the 93km stretch since 2006.
