Government urged to phase out alcohol sponsorship of sporting events

The Government is being encouraged to prioritise the phasing out of sponsorship of sporting events.

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland believes there is a strong link between promoting alcohol and rising levels of drinking among young people.

The group was reacting to proposals by the Government to curb the excessive consumption of alcohol in Ireland - including minimum pricing to prevent the sale of very cheap alcohol.

Professor Frank Murray has described the increasing levels of alcohol-related illness here as 'catastrophic'

He is urging the Government to take a pioneering strategy:
