The Government will do "anything we can" to minimise stress for Leaving Cert students, the Education Minister has said.

Normal Foley has also insisted that the senior cycle is of "very high-standing" in Ireland.

It comes after an OECD review found the Leaving Cert points system generates high levels of stress and anxiety among students and their families.

According to The Irish Times, the review suggests the exams are too rigid and narrow - with its main focus seeming to be that it acts as a filter for higher education.

Speaking on The Hard Shoulder, Minister Foley stressed that the full OECD report isn't published yet - with the full document due out in the coming days.

She said an 'extensive review' of senior cycle programmes - including the likes of transition year and the Leaving Cert applied - has been ongoing for several years by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA).

The findings of the OECD report will feed into that broader review.

Minister Foley said: "We're all aware there are both positives and negatives to any education system.

"I would have to point out that part of the review by the OECD they have commented on the fact it's a Leaving Cert process of very high-standing in Ireland, and very highly-regarded in the country.

"In terms of Ireland and its education status, we're one of the most high-performing systems in the OECD".

However, she said the Government accepts that Leaving Cert and Junior Cert students experience stress.

She observed: "Anything we can do moving forward to minimise that level of stress, we would be focused on doing that.

"There are many motivating factors for a review [of the process]... but I do think it's important we would look at the review in its entirety."

While this year's traditional Leaving Cert exams were replaced by predictive grading, over 2,500 students opted to take postponed exams which got underway earlier this month.
