Helen McEntee has said the incoming Government has to be 'ambitious' when it comes to housing.

The incoming coalition, made up of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and nine TDs in the Regional Independents group, is promising 300,000 new homes by the end of 2030.

However, documents from the Housing Department indicate reaching a level of 54-thousand new-builds per year would not be achieved until 2029 at the earliest, according to The Irish Daily Mail.

Minister McEntee, who led her party's team for government formation talks, says the next government will be carrying out reviews of ongoing schemes to support home buyers.

"We have to be ambitious and the Programme for Government sets out how we can expand the schemes that are working really well," she said.

"The First Time Buyers Scheme which Fine Gael introduced a number of years ago - we're going to review that and see can we do even more.

"The First Home Scheme - we're going to expand that out to not just new builds but second-hand homes."

Minister McEntee also said the Government will also look at how they can "support renters more".
