Union Street Guest House in upstate New York have just experienced the rath of the Internet when one of their policies backfired on them.
Reported by the New York Post, an online policy fro the guest house claimed that guests will be fined $500 for each negative online review they give about the hotel.
Not only that, but the owners have also said they will charge couples who book weddings at the venue $500 for every bad review posted online by their guests as well!
Their policy read:
“Please know that despite the fact that wedding couples love Hudson and our inn, your friends and families may not.”
“If you have booked the inn for a wedding or other type of event . . . and given us a deposit of any kind . . . there will be a $500 fine that will be deducted from your deposit for every negative review . . . placed on any internet site by anyone in your party.”
But the good news is that if you remove the bad review you’ll get your money back.
Hundreds of scathing comments on the review site Yelp drove the rating of the hotel down to a 1-star.
A source at the Union Street Guest House insisted that the policy “was meant to be tongue-in-cheek,” but admitted that the attempt at humour had fallen flat.
But one Yelp member said he received emails from the guest house trying to impose the fine if he didn’t take down the 1-star review he posted.
The policy has since been removed from their website.
