Simon Harris should stop playing a “silly childish game” and name the election date, People Before Profit has said.

The Taoiseach has previously ruled out an election this year and insisted the Dáil would run its full-term.

Despite this, Green leader Roderic O’Gorman has said he favours an election on November 29th and Tánaiste Micheál Martin has said a decision will be made on Monday.

On The Anton Savage Show, Dublin South-Central TD Bríd Smith said it is time for Mr Harris to tell the people what is on his mind.

“I think people are a bit fed up with all of this guesswork and speculation,” she said.

“It just seems to me to be like a silly childish game not to stop concealing what’s in your head.

“Because he has his mind made up - he’s just not telling us.”

In theory, the Dáil does not have to be dissolved until early next year but few in Leinster House expect Mr Harris will wait that long.

“The word on the street, indeed the dogs on the street, are all saying the end of November - so why not just tell people?” Deputy Smith said

“I don’t understand this game playing.”

The Dublin South-Central TD is retiring from politics and People Before Profit activists are “already out canvassing” in a bid to retain the seat for her party.

“We never stop knocking on doors and if we got more time, we’d get everything covered,” she said.

“We definitely won’t get everything covered now, so I probably would prefer a bit more time.

“Having said that, winter is setting in, the days will get very short; people don’t want you banging on the doors in the dark, so I think let’s have a quick campaign over a month to five weeks, [that] would be very good.

“I think he should just say which day - the 22nd or the 29th November because it’s likely to be one of those.”

Recent polls suggest the Fine Gael could gain seats at the election.
