Everyone has had to hold lots of virtual meetings and calls this year, and Santa Claus is no exception.

While meeting Santa is one of the highlights of December for families across the country, the traditional in-person visit to the workshop is unfortunately not possible this year.

However, that doesn't Santa isn't available this year - plenty of fun virtual alternatives are taking place this year.

On today's Newstalk Breakfast, Jess Kelly walked Ciara through some of the virtual events that have popped up.

She said: "He's still accepting letters... but if you do want to see him, he has embraced technology in new ways.

"You can get in touch with him on a few different websites, and there are a few I think parents might like themselves."

She pointed to the Aillwee Caves, who are running workshops through to December 23rd.

A head elf brings viewers through the caves, before reaching Santa's workshop.

Meanwhile, Mrs Claus takes the boys and girls to meet the attractions's birds of prey, while there'll also be a virtual picture with Santa.

It's one example of how the traditional Santa experience has moved online - but unfortunately this year's event is already booked out.

Wexford Winterland is another option, and is also running until December 23rd.

Jess explained: "You get to find out through this one if you're on the naughty or nice list... you get a little certificate, and pouch with reindeer food to leave out on Christmas Eve... and you get to have a virtual chat with Santa."

There are also Lámh special sessions on December 12th and 19th, carried out through sign language.

It costs €17 for the first child and €10 for every child thereafter.

Meanwhile, Google's Santa Tracker obviously has a big job on Christmas Eve itself - but there's plenty to do on the site in the meantime.

Jess said: "Up until Christmas Eve, there's plenty of activities, games, and bits and pieces you can do on,

"Just remember: you're not allowed see Santa on Christmas Eve - you have to be in bed."

And a quick reminder - Santa is an essential worker, so he won't be missing out on this year's visit.
