A group of school children in Co Cork had what was described as a miraculous escape this morning, when their school bus went off the road on the Ballyhooley to Fermoy road at roughly 8am.

The single decker bus appears to have lost control, with weather being suggested as a factor, and left the road, ending up on its side in a field with a tree coming through the window. Most of the children were left unharmed or with just minor injuries, while a broken leg appears to be the most serious injury from the incident.

Students from Coláiste an Chraoibhín, Loetto Secondary School & St. Colman’s College, Fermoy were on the bus.

Grainne Curtin was one of those students and she told Jonathan Healy that as the bus attempted a turn “we flipped into the field” and it "wasn’t until the bus driver broke the glass that people could climb out," she said.

“I felt helpless because there was some people stuck for a little longer,” Grainne said.

“I’m fine, but the worst injury was a broken leg,” she told Newstalk Lunchtime.

Four students brought to Cork University Hospital.

Joanthan also spoke with Eileen Gowen, a mother of two of the children in the crash, who spoke to Jonathan about how she heard of the news, and her reaction as she received the “horrific” news.

Bus Eireann says the accident happened after adverse weather conditions at the weekend but the cause has yet to be established.
