Henry McKean’s London2012 is with thanks to P&G, proud sponsors of mums which says thanks to all mums of Team Ireland for everything they have done in raising these Olympians.
When the judges took their time deciding if it was the Russian of Katie had won gold the place went silent and there was just so much nervousness in the air, and then it was 10-8 to Katie and the place went crazy, stamping of feet, stand up for the girl in green and come on you girl on green were being sung on the underground.
It was surreal when the Irish national anthem came on, is this really happening, then she bit her medal. There was such raw emotion. I know I cried and was totally overwhelmed with it all. This is the first Olympics with female boxing and now Katie Taylor will help the sport continue in the Olympics. I felt this amazing warm adrenilan rush, fuzzy feeling from the crowd which you cant really put into words. you have to experience it, like a joy ride of relief and excitement, a kid breaking into a sweet shop just ulitmate happiness. When the fields of athenry was sung it was ten times better than Gdansk when we were 4 goals down, it was because we had won at something and can be proud.
My ticket was £185 and was worth every penny.
Here is the countdown to the judges final decison.
Last night there was a magical golden sunset over London as Katie Taylor won Team Ireland gold. Our first gold boxing medal since Michael Carruth won gold in Barcelona 92.
The atmosphere inside the ExCel arena in London’s docklands near the Millenium stadium was unbelievable. Katie’s win could inspire a generation. I took the DLR light railway back to the city centre and met this young man from Tipperary.
This fan says Katie made us sweat for it.
This man says the job is not done yet.
