The High Court has awarded a €13.5 million lump sum to an eight-year-old Co Cork boy brain damaged at birth.
Gill Russell from Aghada, is in a wheelchair, needs 24 hour care and can only communicate with his eyes.
Liability was admitted and he received an apology from the HSE and Cork University Maternity Hospital 2 years ago.
At that time he received an interim payment of 1.4 million euro on the basis that a new law allowing for periodic payments was to be introduced.
He's received a lump sum in the absence of new legislation.
Gill Russells’ solicitor Clíona Kenny, from Ernest J Cantillon solicitors, spoke to Jonathan Healy on Lunchtime today.
She stated that Karen, Gill's mother, was stunned: "She is absolutely delighted and so grateful to the courts, the court services and the justice system.
"This result means that now she can stop worrying as to how her son can receive care and how his needs will be dealt with in the future. This money will ensure that Gill can get everything he needs."
