The High Court has ordered the detention of a Portuguese-flagged cruise ship at Dublin Port over an alleged fuel debt of nearly US$100,000.

The veteran liner the Princess Danae can carry up to 570 passengers.

It was scheduled to set sail to La Rochelle in France at 7pm this evening.

Earlier today Mr. Justice Roderick Murphy ordered the Princess Danae be kept under safe arrest at Dublin Port until further order.

The vessel is being detained for alleged non-payment of a €94,000 (€75,192) debt for fuel dating from last April and owed to an Italian company Omega Bunker srl.

The cruise ship can carry up to 570 passengers but its agents have not confirmed how many are on-board.

Princess Danae was due to set sail from Dublin this evening for its next port of call at La Rochelle.

It is not yet known if alternative arrangements will have to be put in place for passengers.
