In the UK lawyers acting on behalf of families of those killed in the Hillsborough Disaster will today write to the Attorney-General demanding that new inquests be held in Liverpool.

The Hillsborough Families Support Group met at Anfield yesterday to discuss the next step in its campaign for justice for the 96 victims of the 1989 disaster.

They met for the first time since the release of a report on Wednesday.

It uncovered how police attempted to shift the blame for the disaster.

The group released a statement yesterday evening.

It said “Those responsible can avoid accountability no longer”.

It added there are 3 avenues that they will rigorously follow to ensure justice for the families is finally achieved.

They say that the report of the Hillsborough Independent Panel clearly shows that the previous inquest proceeded on a false factual basis and that its conclusions can therefore no longer stand.

They are calling on the Attorney-General to apply for a new inquest as soon as possible.

They also say they want a full and immediate investigation into criminal prosecutions that may be brought against all those responsible.

Finally they say that – where appropriate – they will apply for civil proceedings to be re-opened where they may have, in the past, been dismissed or settled on a false factual basis.
