An inquiry's being planned after the death of a baby who was born last week at Cavan General Hospital.

The baby boy passed away after being transferred to a hospital in Dublin.

It's understood doctors decided to deliver the baby boy by C-section at Cavan General Hospital on Thursday of last week.

After he was born, the baby needed to be transferred to a neo-natal unit in Dublin for treatment.

However he subsequently died there.

The coroner has been notified of the child's death.

As a result of the case, the HSE is set to mount a clinical incident review, which will see a multi-disciplinary team examine all aspects of care provided.

Officials have extended their deepest sympathies to the little boy's family, and the HSE has offered support to his parents.
