Binge drinking has been found to have increased by 4% since 2023 as the HSE urges people to reduce their alcohol consumption.

Healthy Ireland has published research which shows that 28% of Irish people drink more alcohol than recommended in a single session.

In Ireland, a standard drink is one small glass of wine, a glass of beer or a single shot of spirits.

The HSE has urged people to drink no more than six standard drinks in one session.

"Rethink your relationship with alcohol"

"The New Year is an excellent opportunity to rethink your relationship with alcohol and consider how small changes can lead to big improvements in your health and wellbeing,” HSE Consultant in Public Health Medicine Dr Claire Neill said.

“By taking simple actions today, you can create lasting benefits for your future.

“Simple actions, such as incorporating alcohol-free days into your week, exploring non-alcoholic drink options, or setting clear limits for yourself, can make a significant difference over time.”

Cutting back on alcohol or giving it up completely can have significant immediate positive effects on your health and wellbeing, including:

  • Improved sleep
  • No more hangovers
  • Better liver health
  • Weight management
  • Sharper focus and more energy
  • Improved skin and hydration
  • More money in your pocket

The HSE have compiled tips for how to start cutting back on alcohol, including:

  • Tracking your drinking
  • Setting limits and sticking to them
  • Pouring your own drinks
  • Drinking slowly
  • Alternate drinks
  • Eating before and while drinking
  • Taking breaks from alcohol

The HSE self-assessment tool allows people to check in on their relationship with alcohol, especially if they are thinking of making some changes in relation to drinking.
