Sinn Féin is preparing to table a motion calling for legislation to be introduced and the findings of an expert group to be published.
In extending its sympathies to the family of Savita Halappanavar the party believes it is now time to give legal effect to the "X Case" ruling.
A full Cabinet discussion on the report from the expert group set up to advise the government on abortion law is not due to take place until next week.
If enacted the legislation would allow for abortion in circumstances where there is a real threat to the life of the expectant mother.
Stephanie Lord is Spokesperson for Choice Ireland.
She says it is time to legislate.
"The Supreme Court handed down a decision in 1992 that said that...a woman had a Constitutional right to abortion in cases where there was a real, substantial risk to her life" she said.
"The European Court of Human Rights said in the ABC decision that the State must legislate for abortion in cases where it"s already legal".
"So that"s our position on it - this legislation needs to be introduced immediately" she added.
Calls for changes to inquiry
Meanwhile the husband of Savita Halappanavar - Praveen - is calling for the removal of some of the members of the Health Service Executive (HSE) inquiry team set up to review the death of his wife last month.
HE has told The Irish Times today that 3 doctors from University Hospital Galway should be removed from the panel.
The chairman of the group has said it is important to have representatives of the hospital on his team so they can compare guidelines.
Mr. Halappanavar says he wants the inquiry to be fully independent.
