How clean is your hotel room?
Hotelier and At Your Service host John Brennan said it depends on the hotel's level and hygiene standards.
There are around 910 hotels in Ireland, with 51 of them being five-star establishments.
On Moncrieff today, Mr Brennan said to stay away from one hotel room fixture.
“The one area that drives me around the twist is teas made in bedrooms,” he said.
“The cup of tea and the cup of coffee, of all the things in the room, is actually the dirtiest of them all.
“In all my years going to hotels, I have never met anyone coming down a corridor with a tray of clean cups. So, that raises the question: where were they washed?”
Cautious
The hotelier said it is the one thing he would be extremely cautious about.
“Anything that’s in the room is generally cleaned in the room and the mattresses are turned approximately every month,” he said.
“Sometimes professional cleaning companies do jobs on mattresses, pillows might be taken out, aired, and duvets likewise.
“But the one things that stay in the room are cups, saucers, and glasses – I’ve never seen anyone walking down a hotel corridor with a tray of clean cups and glasses.”
Mr Brennan said he recently had a bad hotel experience while filming for At Your Service.
“I’m not going to say where this hotel was, but it was the worst of all I have done,” he said.
“I slept in the car because I could not possibly sleep in the room; it was that rank.
“They actually have a very unique business that is still open to this day, but I just said, ‘I can’t do this,’ and slept in the car, which was extremely rare.”
Hotel kettles
Mr Brennan said hotel kettles can also be lacking in cleanliness.
“The kettle handle might get a wipe with a cloth or something to that nature,” he said.
“But to be fair to the kettle, the kettle boils so there’s not going to be much living in the kettle, and you don’t put your lips to it and drink from it.
“The cup is a different kettle of fish altogether because it could have been in the room for 12 months.
“I have no time for teas made in bedrooms; I think it is the dirtiest thing that was ever introduced to hotel rooms.”
