We may be right in the middle of summer – but we’re seeing worse weather than you might expect in October and November.

On Newstalk Breakfast this morning, presenters Shane and Ciara said yesterday was one of the worst July days they could remember.

“I think it's fair to say, at the moment, everybody is talking about the weather,” said Shane.

“Yesterday was like an October day. I thought of you at about 5pm yesterday evening Ciara because I was, kind of, slagging you for doing this a couple of days ago, but we did it yesterday – we turned on the heat.”

Ciara said she took her own precautions against the weather when she arrived home.

“I actually had a little nap – I got into bed, I got under my duvet and then that wasn't enough, so I turned on my electric blanket.

“Now I do live in a kind of a cold drafty house but yesterday, it was cold, it was damp, it was miserable and worse than that, it was dark.

“When we came out of the studio and I was, you know, heading back out towards the wilds of Wicklow, it was dark out there like you would see in October or November.”

Monsoon weather

She said Ireland has had plenty of poor summers before – but it is hard to remember one this bad.

“There was a couple of nice days in the last week - like beautiful days - and then like monsoon weather the next day,” she said.

“I don't know if you can say that a bad July is anything to do with climate change or if it's a blip or whatever but like, what I would love to know is what are people doing with their summer?

“Because it doesn't feel like summer to me. I haven't even put on summer clothes, because I don't really have to. I think I might as well just wear the same clothes I wear all year round.

“We want to know what you're doing with your summer - particularly if you have kids, what are you doing to occupy them?”

Forecast

Met Éireann is forecasting a drier and clearer evening later on; however, cloud will “gradually extend southwards overnight along with patchy drizzle and mist”.

Tomorrow looks set to be dry for most of the afternoon with sunny spells gradually increasing in the evening.

The weekend will see a mix of sunny spells and showers, with temperatures potentially reaching 21C.
