Iceland has raised its aviation code to red after a surge in seismic activity at the Bardarbunga volcano.
It indicates that there have now been eruptions at the site.
Thousands of small earthquakes have rattled the area over the past week and there are fears an eruption could cause disruption to international air travel similar ot that seen in 2010.
However, the Chief Executive of the Irish Aviation Authority, Eamonn Brennan, says if the volcano erupts - it won’t case the same level of disruption as 2010:
“The reality, as we’ve learned and everybody has learned...what happens now is if it goes up we just put a fence around it for 250 nautical miles and say no aircraft fly there. And then we have categorised airspace depending on the density of ash. And we leave it up to the airlines if they want to do it.”
