Immediately after the economic crash that ravaged the island nation, McDonald's decided to pull their fast-food restaurants out of Iceland. For most of the 323,000 Icelanders, the all-American chain's decision was symbolic of the corrupting influence rampant capitalism held over the country.

On the day before the final McDonald's outlet turned off its lights and faded its golden arches for the final time, October 30th 2009, Hjörtur Smárason went inside and bought a burger and fries. And now, 1925 days later, it's still intact and shows little sign of rotting any time soon.

Smárason decided not to eat the burger, but left in and its original packaging on a shelf in his garage. Then, three years later he opened the bag to see that it was looking exactly the same as the day he had bought it. So he donated it to the National Museum of Iceland, where it was kept in storage for another year.

Now approaching its fifth anniversary, the burger is not expected to show any signs of decay until 2020. And the world is waiting with baited breath, and watching. Now on display at the Bus Hostel Reykjavik, a live-stream webcam is allowing people all over the world to watch the rot - or not.

For those with a lot of patience, you can view it here.
