A man who is facing eviction for the second time in two years says he's 'going around knocking on doors' to try and find somewhere to live.

David and his partner are living in north county Dublin and have been trying to find accomodation with no success.

They previously lived in one property for 11 years until it was sold and have now been served with an eviction notice from their current home.

He told Lunchtime Live they can't find anything they can afford.

"Being an older renter heading to the age of 65, and my partner of 60, it's not easy to find anything within our budget," he said.

"We were initially evicted after living in one home for 11 years and found out the landlord there wasn't registered.

"He didn't even engage with us; we just got a letter shoved in the door from the estate agent - that was our first indication he was selling up.

"We moved to our current home in April of 2022."

'There's nothing out there'

David said he's currently living 10 to 15 minutes away from work and is hoping for something similar "to be able to have some decent sleep".

"We're having to look around north county Dublin [and the] Meath and Louth borders that's within a reasonable travelling time for me to get into work," he said.

"It is tough, there is nothing out there.

"I've been on all the websites, I've been on to estate agents.

"I even knocked on a house last night because I've been going past [seeing] the garden getting more overgrown.

"So I knocked on the next door neighbour and asked is this property for rent?

"The guy came out, a very nice guy, and said, 'No I'm actually living here'.

"I'm now going around knocking on doors to try to find somewhere to live".

'An illegal landlord'

David said they found their current property through a friend at work and "literally had two weeks left" when they moved.

"I don't earn a great amount of money - at the moment I'm paying half my month's wages in rent," he said.

David said they were paying just over €1,000 with electricity bills included when they first moved in; but the rent has gone up twice since then.

"He's an illegal landlord, there's not a lot we can do," he said.

"That's electricity included so we can't even get a rebate on our electricity bill.

"We can't claim Rent Credit because he's an illegal landlord so we're missing out on all this as well".

David said the landlord asked them if they'd found another place to live "three days after he gave us the eviction notice".

David added that his local council told him there's nothing they can do without a letter from his landlord.
