Israel could potentially miss this year's Eurovision Song Contest over a row about the country's entry.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organises the event, is "scrutinising" the lyrics of 'October Rain'.

Some of the song lyrics include: 'There’s no air left to breathe. No place, no me from day to day. Who told you boys don’t cry? Hours and hours and flowers. Life is not a game for the cowards'.

Flowers is said to be a slang term that references fallen Israeli soldiers.

The country has been accused of genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza in the aftermath of Hamas attacks against Israel on October 7th.

The Palestinian death toll now stands at almost 30,000 with more than 69,000 injured.

Newstalk presenter Tom Dunne told The Hard Shoulder he doesn't see how Israel can appear on the stage in Sweden.

"I think it's completely inconceivable for Israel to take part in the Eurovision in the backdrop of what is going in in Gaza," he said.

"I don't think you can separate those things and to act like it's not happening is just unconscionable.

"I just think if we were to sit down on the night and Israel was to go on, as if nothing is happening, and perform a song that it would be a very, very low point in the history of Eurovision."

Tom said Israel walking away would keep all sides happy.

"I've kind of being waiting to see if something was going to give and this seems to me like a perfect out for the two parties," he said.

"Israel has gone ahead and called its song 'October Rain', I think you can probably join the dots and see what that's about.

"The EBU is taking a look at that and saying, 'You can't have political references'.

"They've kicked out people before on the basis of that.

"It gives Israel a chance to say, 'We're not changing the song' and then I think everyone goes home happy.

"They're not at it and the contest can continue as normal".

'Young target walking on stage'

Tom said Israel's singer will ultimately bear the brunt of public opinion.

"This is a 20-year-old girl, Eden Golan, at that point she would be the epicentre of all anti-Israel sentiment on Earth," he said.

"They'd have this young target walking on stage; if she wasn't walking on stage to either a sea of Palestinian flags or pro-Palestinian chants, it would be a miracle.

"It takes over the entire event, it's the only bit of the event people will talk about as long as they're at it," he added.

The EBU has said broadcasters are given the opportunity to submit a new song or lyrics if a song is deemed unacceptable for any reason.

There have been calls for Ireland to pull out of the contest in protest at Israel's inclusion.
