An independent review into the handling of Mairia Cahill's rape allegations has begun in Belfast.

The review is being taken by the UK's former DPP, Sir Keir Starmer. Mr Starmer promised a “robust review” of the case.

Speaking after a round of preliminary meetings, he said: “I am grateful to the complainants for meeting me today and welcome their early input into this Review. It is very important that they have confidence in this process.

“The Director of Public Prosecutions has assured me full access to all materials and PPS staff for the purposes of this review. I will conduct an independent and robust review of all relevant material and will publish my findings.

He is investigating the handling of both the prosecution of the alleged rapist, and of the people accused of running an alleged IRA "kangaroo court".

The man accused of Ms Cahill’s rape was cleared in court after Ms Cahill withdrew her evidence.

It is understood that Mairia Cahill herself met with Mr Starmer today as the review gets underway.
