It seems that if you want to party on New Year’s Eve, Europe and South America are the places to be. Jawbone, the wearable fitness tracker, has just released its statistics on how wearers said goodbye to 2014, showing that Argentina, Chile and Brazil’s summertime New Year celebrations mean those nations go for broke.
Back in the northern hemisphere, despite being gripped by an icy winter, New Year’s Eve is a sort of super holiday for Russians. The familiar Christmas traditions we celebrate a week earlier like visiting family members, exchanging gifts, Santa Claus (‘Father Frost’), and decorating ‘New Year Trees’ all celebrated on January 1st. Russia, Ukraine and Romania stay up later than anywhere else in the world.
The earliest to hit the hay on December 31st are China and Israel, countries which celebrate their own New Year’s traditions at different times during the calendar year.
Ireland ranked 33rd in the world for staying up; the average bedtime for revelling Irish men and women was 01.59am, and 87.4 percent of us were awake for the midnight countdown.
