An investigation is underway after a young inmate died at Castlerea Prison in County Roscommon.

The Irish Prison Service said the man died today and his next of kin have been notified.

Reports suggest the man was in his 20s and on remand at the prison.

The death will now be investigated by both the Irish Prison Service and Gardaí.

The cause of death will be determined by the Coroner’s Office.
