The Road Safety Authority will begin trials next month on letting driving instructors sit in during tests.
TheJournal reports the option will be available to those attending tests in Waterford and Thurles for a period of six weeks beginning March 23.
Instructors will be present only for support and observation, and are completely forbidden from interfering.
A letter sent to driving instructors by the RSA explained the purpose of the change:
“The objective of this initiative is to bring together two very important stages in a candidate’s learning to drive experience – their training and assessment.”
It's unclear whether instructors will charge an additional fee for their appearance, but it will be up to the driver whether they would like to be accompanied or not.
The RSA hopes the change will reduce complaints from those who fail the test, and give instructors a chance to see where their students are going wrong.
Will an additional passenger make the process easier, or lead to all sorts of motoring mishaps? Driving tests can be frustrating at the best of times, so it might end up like that time George Hook was picked up by a dodgy taxi man.
