Tens of thousands of public servants have not been paid this morning. Gardaí, nurses, prison officers, transport workers and teachers are among those whose salaries have not arrived in their bank accounts because of problems at Bank of Ireland.

The bank says the payments will be made first thing tomorrow.

Bank of Ireland says a delay with a payments file has delayed credits going into some customers accounts.

However the file includes payments from the public sector body - which handles payroll for the vast majority of public sector workers.

A spokeswoman for Bank of Ireland said the bank offered a "profuse apology" to the workers affected.

We can confirm a payment file was delayed last night and payment will credit tomorrow morning. Sincere apologies for this.

She said the bank could assure people that the problems would be solved today and that wages would arrive in workers' accounts first thing tomorrow morning.

The problem is not just limited to public workers however, as the payments file also included wage payments for a significant number of private sector workers.

That means potentially hundreds of thousands of workers will have to wait one day more for their wages.

Both Bank of Ireland and AIB say customers who incur any late payment fees as a result of the error will be refunded in full.

Ulster Bank says if customers are in difficulty because of the delay that they should bring ID and their payslip into their local branch.
