Gardaí in Co. Westmeath are investigating a serious assault in Mullingar overnight.

A man aged in his 40s sustained head injuries after he was punched in the face on Oliver Plunkett Street at about 1am.

He had been talking with 2 other men when he was punched, fell backwards and hit his head off the pavement.

A local teenage man was arrested in relation to the incident.

He is being questioned at Mullingar Garda station while a second man has been spoken to by the Gardaí.

CCTV footage will be viewed as part of investigations.
