Police in England say they are investigating after a dog was found tied to a heavy rock in a river.
The dog - a Belgian Shepherd named Bella - was hauled to safety by a member of the public in Nottinghamshire.
Bella was found with a carrier bag containing a large rock tied to her lead.
Jane Harper spotted the dog in the River Trent at around 8.45am on Monday January 6th.
She told the BBC: "It looked like a dead dog, and then it blinked so I got [her friend Joanne] to hold my dogs and went in.
"Adrenaline just kicked in and I had to get her out.
"We thought she might have just got caught in the river but it was only when I tried to take her out I couldn't move her.
"The water was so murky you couldn't see the rock at first. It was horrific."
Two people were arrested in connection with the investigation, but have since been released under investigation.
Nottinghamshire Police said the dog is recovering well, as she is being cared for by a local vet.
Inspector Heather Sutton said: "I would like to thank the public for their support, which has meant that we have a number of lines of enquiry that we will be following up as part of our continuing work to understand the circumstances surrounding this incident.
"Animal cruelty investigations can often be very complex, so it's important that we take our time to properly understand this case to ensure that the appropriate action is taken against whoever may be responsible and bring the offenders to justice."
