Gardaí in Co Meath have launched an investigation after four men armed with a gun, a knife and an axe raided a house near Tara last night.

A woman and a 3 year old girl were in the house when the men forced their way in just after 11pm.

They ransacked the house and took a number of legally held firearms, ammunition and assorted personal property.

They also took the owners car which was later found abandoned near the M50.

Neither the woman or the child were injured.

In follow-up operation Gardaí searched a number of properties in the Rathmines area of Dublin and found a number of firearms.

A black BMW car was also found which was the subject of a hijacking incident in Dublin City Centre on Tuesday.

A 22 year old man was arrested at the scene and is being questioned at Terenure Garda Station under the provisions of Section 30 Offences against the State Act 1939.
