The National Ambulance Service has launched an investigation after an ambulance carrying a patient from Cork to Dublin for a lung transplant, ground to a halt at Newlands Cross on the outskirts of Dublin.
According to reports, in the Irish Examiner, the incident happened on Thursday, when the ambulance was being given a garda escort from Cork to a Dublin hospital.
It's not clear whether the ambulance ran out of diesel or had a mechanical problem.
The patient walked from the ambulance to the garda car and was taken to hospital.
It’s led to calls for a full investigation and an audit of the country's ambulance service, with ambulances now having to cover greater areas.
The HSE says it is looking into the matter to ascertain what happened.
