Investigations are continuing in Co Offaly after shots were fired at a former Fianna Fáil councillor yesterday.

Ger Killally was with his children, 2 year old Beibhinn, 3 year old Ferdia,  and had his father Jay in the car when two shots were fired at the vehicle.

The 42 year old was leaving his house in Shean when a silver Opel Astra, with an 06 registration plate, blocked his way.

A masked man who was sitting in the passenger seat then emerged and fired two shots at Mr Killally's car, a Volkswagen Passat which is owned by his father.

Mr Killally sped away from the scene taking a concrete bollard that was at the entrance to the house, with him. His car then flipped into a ditch and he and his passengers sustained minor injuries.

The silver Astra pursued Mr Killally initially but then turned around and sped past his house back towards Edenderry.

Kevin Doyle of the Herald Newspaper told Newstalk Breakfast that a substantial sum of money was found in the boot of Mr Killally's car by Gardaí. He also revealed that the former Fianna Fail councillor had received death threats in recent months.

Councillor Fergus McDonnell from Edenderry Town Council, served with Mr Killally for 5 years.

He says locals are shocked and mystified by what's happened.

Mr. Killally ran alongside former Taoiseach Brian Cowen in the 2002 General Election.

He received a suspended three-year prison sentence last year for theft.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of the townland between the hours of 9.30am and 10.40am yesterday morning to contact Tullamore Garda Station.

They would also like to speak to anyone who may have seen the silver Volkswagen Passat overturn or anyone who observed the silver Astra car with the partial registration 06-D in the vicinity of Shean.

An incident room has been established at Tullamore. They can be contacted at 057-9327600. Anyone with information can also contact the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station.
