“We, the undersigned States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), reaffirm our continued and unwavering support for the independence, impartiality, and integrity of the ICC,” the statement in support of the ICC read.

“The Court serves as a vital pillar of the international justice system by ensuring accountability for the most serious international crimes, and justice for victims.”

Sinn Féin whip Padraig MacLochlainn said President Trump's comments betray a lack of understanding of the region.

“It's utterly reckless,” he said.

“What he said, whether it'll ever see the light of day, I doubt it, but it's utterly reckless.

“There's no sense of, you know, diplomacy, no sense of international law.

“What he says is a stream of consciousness, it doesn't matter what the consequences - that's the problem.”
