Ireland’s weather could make it an even more attractive tourist destination as the impacts of climate change increase, according to Ciara Kelly.
The Newstalk Breakfast host was speaking on how to market Ireland going forward and suggested it could be a haven for those uncomfortable with scorching heat.
Ciara said she wasn’t trying to “underestimate the perils of climate change” – but noted that it could see people heading for cooler areas during hot summers.
The presenter also said many marketable things about Ireland already exist such as the natural landscape, friendly people, and of course – pubs.
“Our countryside is hugely beautiful,” said Ciara.
“Our coastline has vast stretches of unspoiled beaches and there is just this gorgeous natural landscape.
“I think when people come here, they like it, that’s just how it is and that’s just down to things like our pubs and our friendliness.
“People can go in for a pint somewhere and have people chatting to them at the bar – I’m not sure you get that everywhere in the world.”
Co-host Shane Coleman agreed “the weather could become an asset for us”.
“I was in Italy in July and I will never go back to the Mediterranean again at that time of year,” he said.
“There are challenges as well and we shouldn’t overlook those challenges.
“A marketing campaign doesn’t particularly focus on challenges but there are things we do need to get right.”
Deterrents
Shane said anti-social behaviour and high prices are a big deterrent for visitors to Ireland.
“Obviously anti-social behaviour in Dublin is a problem, and worse,” he said.
“Price-wise, we need to be careful – though that’s not exclusive to Ireland as my holiday to Italy in the summer opened my eyes to.
“Accommodation is also an issue as a lot of hotels are being used to house refugees – that’s going to be a big challenge.”
Despite the odds, Shane thinks “we can absolutely” improve the marketing of the country.
