Irish naval vessel the LE Eithne has completed preparations sail to the Mediterranean - where it will take part in a mission to prevent further migrant ship tragedies.
The Naval Service ship is on standby and is expected to sail by the middle of next week. Preparations are currently being made in Haulbowline in Cork.
The Irish Red Cross today welcomed today's deployment.

It says the Irish contribution will help create a safer environment for overcrowded migrant ships crossing from North Africa to Europe.
Over 1,750 migrants have died crossing the Mediterranean this year.
