Ireland’s water supply has become “extremely low”, Uisce Éireann has warned.

In recent days, the island has basked in extremely warm temperatures with temperatures of up to 20°C in parts of the west of Ireland today.

On Newstalk Breakfast, Uisce Éireann spokesperson Margaret Attridge said the hot weather is “pushing demand up” for water.

“While the high temperatures are welcome, there has actually been very little rain in recent months,” she said.

“It’s over the winter that the heavy rainfall recharges our lakes and our underground reservoirs that keeps us going through the summer months.

“Some of our lake sources now are extremely low; back to levels of the drought in 2018.

“So, we need to do what we can to protect our resources.”

Uisce Éireann has recommended that people take shorter showers and fix any leaky taps they have.
