Irish people have topped the list as the best holiday deal hunters in Europe. A new survey also puts us up top when it comes to tipping and how much we spend on duty free.

The Expedia survey finds that the Irish are also more irritated by baggage fees than any other European nation.

It says the Irish are the most likely to purchase tickets for attractions in advance, with 30% making this saving versus an EU average of 17%.

We are also among the Europeans most likely to book an international holiday based on getting the best value for local currency, with over 35% doing so.

The Irish are also one of the most organised nations in the world at saving for a holiday. The most organised are the Mexicans (84%), followed by the Indians (80%), Malaysians and Germans (79%) and then the Irish (77%) - based on the percentage saving three months or more in advance.

But despite our thrifty nature when it comes to saving, we also outdo the rest when it comes to spending. The Irish - along with British - are the European nation most likely to spend money on new holiday clothes. And the difference in spending is significant with 59% compared to an EU average of just 38%.

We are also the most likely to spend on haircuts and body hair removal before a holiday, along with Southern Europeans. The Italians lead on the 'de-fuzzing' front at 30%, followed by the Spanish at 23% and then the Irish at 21%.

However in the global vanity stakes, the Irish are still behind the image-conscious Brazilians and Indians, where more than 60% buy new clothes, more than 50% get a new haircut before a holiday and 33% arrange hair removal treatments.

But our high spending does not stop with grooming.

Globally, Europeans are the least likely to spend at the airport. The Irish buck that trend, with most of our spending there going to alcohol.

The Irish are also some of the most likely Europeans to buy alcoholic drinks on a flight - along with the British and Norwegians.
