The Irish Cancer Society is turning to technology to try and stop kids smoking.

It has joined forces with a European Commission campaign to offer a smartphone app to help young people kick the habit.

Latest figures show 12% of 12 to 18-year-olds describe themselves as current smokers.

The iCoach App uses on-line interactive health coach.

It is free to download for both Android and iPhone handsets.

The  Society has partnered with the European Commission Ex- Smokers are Unstoppable campaign to offer the app to young people through the X-HALE Youth Awards programme.

Through X-HALE the Society works with young people in 14 areas across the country to address the issue of smoking in their communities.

The campaign launched back in June of 2010 and is currently promoted by the EC across 27 States.

Overall it aims to provide smokers with motivation to quit and with practical help.
