The Department of Foreign Affairs has urged all Irish citizens in the Libyan city of Benghazi to leave immediately.

Intelligence reports suggest that there is a specific and imminent threat to Westerners there.

The Department is advising against all travel to there and urges any Irish citizens who are there to leave immediately.

Caution since US Consulate attack

The Department has advised against travel to Libya since the US Consulate in Benghazi was attacked last September resulting in fatalities.

It had cautioned that “further violent incidents” were possible across the country.

The Department had previously asked all Irish citizens living or travelling in Libya to register their details with the Department of Foreign Affairs or directly with the Embassy of Ireland in Rome, who are responsible for Libya.

Irish citizens concerned about the situation in Libya may contact the Consular Section at the Department of Foreign Affairs on 01-4082000.

Britain, Germany and the Netherlands have also issued similar advice to their citizens.
