An Irish company has won a major contract to carry out work on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA).

TechWorks Marine is based in Dun Laoghaire in Dublin.

It will lead a research project on monitoring coastal outlets.

The firm is a provider of oceanographic equipment and services to private and public sectors both in Ireland and overseas.

Formed in 2002 it specialises in the integrated real-time monitoring platforms based around a range of data acquisition and transmission systems.

It is the first time an ESA Earth Observation project has been led by an Irish group and was secured with support from Enterprise Ireland.

The ESA is an international organisation with 19 members.

Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom are all members of the agency.

Canada also takes part in some projects under a Cooperation agreement while Romania signed its accession to the body in January 2011.

There is around 2,200 staff working for the ESA from all the member states in various locations across Europe and Canada.
