A young Irish girl has died after falling from a hotel balcony on the Spanish island of Majorca.

It happened early this morning in Alcudia when her parents were sleeping.

Alcudia is a town in the north of the holiday island of Mallorca.

In a statement to Newstalk Spain's Guardia Civil said the case is under investigation.

Police received an emergency call after the 12-year-old girl fell from a hotel balcony.

Another person staying at the hotel called the emergency services when they found her body.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
