An Irish man has died after falling from a balcony in the Canary islands.

42-year-old Robert Delves from Dublin had been on holiday with his family at the time.

He was at a resort in Tenerife with his wife and children when tragedy struck earlier today.

It is understood a loose handrail led the 42-year-old - from Rush in the north of the capital to plunge up to 10 metres from his apartment balcony.

The fall caused serious head injures and efforts by paramedics to save his life were unsuccessful.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is providing consular assistance to Mr. Delves' family.
