The ‘quiet carriage’ is being reintroduced on trains between Cork and Dublin.
The option has not been available on Irish trains since it was dropped in 2018.
Iarnród Éireann said the new option will offer choice to all customers, while also improving services for those with sensory difficulties.
The carriage is bookable online from today and is clearly marked with ‘quiet carriage’ purple branding.
An Iarnród Éireann spokesperson said the company was delighted to reintroduce the option.
“This quieter carriage will not only be popular with those who have sensory challenges, but also for those who wish to relax and enjoy their journey without excessive use of mobile phones or other devices, or who may have some work to do, which requires quietness,” they said.
“Having trialled quieter carriages in the past, the addition on its reintroduction of clear branding during online booking, and on the train itself, means the choice for customers will be clear and, where quieter carriages are in operation, will be well signalled for all.”
