Irish Rail will introduce e-tickets for all intercity train bookings from this Tuesday.
Irish Rails Corporate Communications Manager Barry Kenny announced all intercity fares within the Republic of Ireland will offer e-tickets from January 23rd onwards.
Passengers who book online or through the Irish Rail app or website will now be emailed a barcode that can be scanned at barriers.
There will be no changes to ticket prices with the introduction of e-tickets.
E-tickets will not be available on train routes leaving the Republic of Ireland, including the Connolly Station to Belfast service.
First speaking on The Anton Savage Show this morning, Mr Kenny said e-tickets have already been available on some low-fare and flexible tickets, but it will now be rolled out across the State.
Mr Kenny later told Newstalk Irish Rail made the "sustainable” decision and will prevent “millions” of paper tickets being printed.
“It will also provide greater flexibility for customers in terms of being able to change return legs of journeys,” he said.
“This is a way to offer customers more convenience.”
Mr Kenny confirmed no changes will be made to Irish Rail intracity DART and commuter services.
