The Irish scouts have evacuated the site of The World Scout Jamboree 2023 in South Korea ahead of Tropical Storm Khanun.
The World Scout Jamboree 2023 is ending activities on site early due to expected adverse weather conditions which are expected on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
A total of 144 Irish scouts and 78 adults travelled to Seoul to attend the Jamboree, all of whom will leave the site for other accommodation.
The Departure Plan is being managed by a Swedish scouter – aided by the Korean Government agencies and the event organisers.
The evacuation plan will involve 900 buses to transfer scouts to their new accommodation.
Scouts are expected to begin leaving the jamboree site at 08.00 (Korean time) on Tuesday morning.
Organisers anticipate that it will take up to 14 hours for all 40,000 scouts on-site to be transported from the site.
More than 100 people have been treated for heat-related illnesses at the jamboree, as Korea faces one of its hottest summers in years.
Evacuation
All scouts are being transported to the greater Seoul area with accommodation and food being provided by the Korean Government in various facilities, including community centres, gymnasiums, schools, hostels, and hotels.
In a statement released by the scouts, the group said spirits among the Irish contingent are "high" and "everyone is calmly preparing for site departure".
The Jamboree hope to reconvene on the 11th of August in a closed/roofed stadium for a K-pop concert and closing ceremony.
The Irish team are also hoping to schedule activities for their scouts in and around Seoul once the weather improves.
