One of Ireland's best known stage actresses, Susan Fitzgerald has passed away after an illness.

The wife of director Michael Colgan appeared in a number of plays in Dublin's Abbey Theatre including Six Characters in Search of an Author and A Midsummer Night's dream.

Ms Fitzgerald most recently appeared in Landmark Productions Between Foxrock and A Hard Place by Paul Howard.

Her television work included roles in Fair City, Rebel Heart and Bachelor's Walk.

The Minister for Arts Jimmy Deenihan has paid tribute to her this afternoon describing her as a 'truly gifted actress'.

She is survived by her husband, daughters Sarah and Sophie, son Richard and her grandchild.
